Sorry, I've been away from this group for a while. Attack of real
life and all that.

My wife and I are looking for a restaurant recommendation for Saturday
for a nice romantic restaurant near Leechmore / Cambridgeside Galleria
in Cambridge. Central Square / Harvard Square / Innman / etc. are not
out of the question. We'd even consider Porter / Davis. T or walking
accessibility a plus. We normally frequent Downtown Boston and the
Western 'burbs, so we' perfer to avoid that. Anything new and
interesting?

My wife and I enjoyed Hellmund, an Afghani restaurant on 1st Street.
Its the other side of the Galleria. I've been tempted to try Bombara,
which is the opposite side.

Inman Sq. has a ton of restaurants. We've eaten at Oleana's, which was
very nice. Had a Mediterranean flare to it. We've also been to The B Side,
and Olay. B Side and Olay aren't really romantic though..

baked spongy/crispy flatbread.

can't think right now of others in the area as my brain is shot from
travelling.

Has something replaced it?

Is 'Olay' (above) really Oleana?

Olay is a Mexican place and Oleana is an American Mediterranean place.

The Mexican place is actually "Ole" :)

There's also Olecito across the street, run by the same people.

So, we decided to try Bambara at the Hotel Marlowe. While the food
was pretty standard "new American cuisine", the service was really
marginal. It was not very attentive. We had a coupon for 5% off which
we had to remind the server about three times before he got the
manager to take it off. What is worse, he bought a sample of one of
the soups as an "amuse" without our asking and we were charged $1.00
each for this. Now $2.00 isn't much, but that is a new one on me. We
didn't bother questioning the charge but just took it out of the
server's tip. Needless to say, we are not running back there.

Thanks for the heads up.. Won't bother with this place then.

Not as of yet, although something is going in there. Word on the
street is that it's being run by the guy who runs the Moan & Dove and the

You don't need to take the word of the street, you can get it directly
from the horse's mouth: http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/1753736

There is a dumpster parked in front of the former B-side lounge, and
the doors are open and people are working there. Probably still weeks
or months from opening and serving beer and food, but a good sign.

The B-Sdie, while a moot point now, was about the least fun place I
could think to go on weekends, for the simple reason that it wasn't
designed to function as crowded as it got. The bar was too big and in
the way, the "mingling" area perpetually put people in each others'
way, and the tables, as mentioned, not so romantic (unless you got
that round booth way back in the corner, but they'd never give it to a
couple).

I was hoping that they would redesign the place to address this, but
it sounds now like the changes are going to be smaller-scale. If
nothing else, the bar should have been shoved back to displace the
seating area to the left when you walk in, because the bar location in
the B-Side ensured that every walking space was cramped.

Nearby on Broadway is the Portugues/Spanish place Con Sol, which is
about as cute and intimate and romantic as anyplace in the area, if
you ask me.

A favorite date for my wife and me is a movie at the Kendall Square Cinema followed by dinner at the Blue Room in the office complex across the street. You can park in the garage for about $2.50 if you get your ticket validated at the cinema. The Blue Room has been around for ages (supposedly it was Julia Child's favorite restaurant, at least in Cambridge). However, it has managed to maintain a high standard of cooking. The menu changes often. It has a Mediterranean slant (Italian, Spanish, North African). The atmosphere is quite romantic. Appetizers run $8-12 and entrees $20-$30.

Another haunt of ours is the Green St. Grill behind Central Square. It looks unpreposessing on the outside but is quite nice inside. The menu changes often and features local ingrediants. They have a $5-per-item bar snacks menu with items like house-made potato chips and house-make pate served on slices of toaste baguette. The house-made potato chips are by far the best I've ever had, light years ahead of those I've had at the Capital Grille and Grille 23. Appetizer and entree prices are about the same as the Blue Room. Parking on nearby River St. is usually not a problem in the evevening.

Anyway, good luck with your search.

Wow! the Blue Room has an exceptional website, although the navigation is a
bit obscure!

I don't recall seeing them in the Kendall Square complex.
They do validate parking in the OKS garage.

You on dialup? It was real fast to load for me, but yeah navigation is obscure.
I prefer side bar roll down, and not down arrows.

High-speed cable, thanks. Most sites load instantly. The Flash was
dog-slow to load and then it had to load again for every link clicked.
Stupid stupid stupid way to build an informational site. Graphic
designer masturbating rather than serving the client's business need.
Typical narcissism. Run up the bill and submit for design awards. Never
mind the actual business case for having a website.

Loaded quickly for me.. but yeah I hate the flash stuff. My wife is a graphic
designer and does things like this. I keep telling her it annoys me.. and for
the love of god, don't full size my browser for me!!! Hate that!

I try to boycott places that have flash driven websites. Sometimes I
relent, but I'll hold off a good long time.

As for resizing my browser, I have that "feature" disabled, but before
I did I'd *never* return to a website that resized my browser. Web designers
(the bad ones) need to be slapped upside the head, the web browser is
intended to render content according to *my* rules, not theirs.

i detest flash as the main part of a site. it is clunkier than regular
content, can't be browsed with text browsers, can't be text searched
(via scraping or in the browser), needs a plugin that needs to be loaded
and regularly updated, crashes firefox if it isn't current in some cases
(i have that problem), is proprietary, etc.

flash should be used for where is may actually have some advantages like
showing video or interactive graphics.

but this is way off topic for ne.food.

Disagree entirely. Their website is purely flash driven, which is the
sign of complete buffoons running the show.
