I'm looking for the best crab cakes in the Boston area. If you've ever
had crab cakes in Maryland you know that what we get up here doesn't
compare.
I remember seeing a short piece on chronicle about a guy who sold real
maryland crab cakes wholesale to restaurants up here. But I never
heard which restaurants he serviced.

So, the call goes out for the best crab cakes in Boston.

Thanks

The finest crab cake I've ever encountered was on the OBX, but
that's a 15 hr. drive... :-)

Every so often, the Quarterdeck does "all you can eat" Maryland
crabs (jimmies.) I cannot confirm nor deny that their crab
cakes are made from Maryland crabs, but the "specials" on the
menu after one of their crabfests typically has Maryland crab
soup, crab cakes, and various seafoods stuffed with crab.

When I'm in the mood for a crab cake, I get the appetizer
which is two crab cakes with Thai chili mayonnaise on a bed
of mixed greens. This is plenty for a dinner.

Quarterdeck is located on Rt. 62 in Maynard,
across from the clock tower.

Haven't had "Maryland crab cakes," but the crab cakes available at
Captain Marden's in Wellesley are wonderful. The fish store always
has them, and I believe the little restaurant they run has them
on the menu quit often, if not permanently.

I've got to agree that most any dump in Maryland or Virginia has better
crabcakes than we find up here. I think it's largely due to the difference
between Maine crabmeat and Chesapeake Bay crabmeat.

That being said, the Blue Room sometimes has a crabcake appetizer that is
really good. Skipjack's is quite respectable also.

The best ones I've had were at Aigo Bistro in Concord. They were essentially
just crab meat, no filler, and were absolutely delicious.

My guess is that the best crab cakes in Boston are likely to be
any that you have shipped from Maryland for cooking at home.

If you want a MD-style crab cake, trying New England versions
is just setting yourself up for disappointment. none of the
crabcakes I've ever had up here can compare to a good blue
crab lump meat crab cake like they make in MD. Sure, some
of the New England versions have been tasty, but they just
aren't in the same league.

A Google search on "Maryland Crab Cakes" will yield lots of
businesses that are happy to ship.

For example:

Phillips (the restaurant chain -- not great, but better than
any crab cakes up here) http://www.phillipsfoods.com/
Faidley's (a Lexington Market institution that used to be
one of the better Baltimore spots for lumpmeat crab cakes.
I don't know if they still are or not.)
http://www.faidleyscrabcakes.com/
Crab Cake Express http://www.crabcakeexpress.com/
Maryland's Best Crab Cakes (aka Olive Grove Restaurant)
http://www.marylandsbestcrabcakes.com/

I'm sure you can find more (and possibly better) shippers
with little effort. If you find a good one, be sure to let
us know!

Just don't fall for the frozen Philips Crab cakes they sell at COSTCO. They
are as far from the real thing as can possibly be. No flavor except salt.
Really vile.
