We attended the opening party at Bouchée last night, a new urban brasserie
on Newbury Street near Dartmouth St in Boston's back bay. It was a mad
house with hundreds of high-powered guests in attendance acting very
entitled. Bouchée is owned by the Back Bay Group who runs many restaurants
in Boston including Abe & Louie's, Atlantic Fish Company, Joe's American Bar
& Grill, Papa Razzi and Charlie's.

Ted Kennedy and his entourage were there. My former executive chef Owen
Tilley is the now the executive chef at Bouchée. Owen was the chef at the
Kennedy compound during the Democratic National Convention.

I believe the restaurant is open for business as of this evening. I assume
it will be a success given the fanfare I witnessed.

I believe the ratio is something like, the more pretentious
the opening gala, the quicker the establishment goes belly-up.

That's what I was thinking too.. they get the big names in on
opening night and then they never come back.

Historically restaurants run by the Back Bay Group tend not to go belly up.
My friend Owen Tilley is a great chef with a lot of experience running
restaurants like the East Coast Grill. The Kennedys were there out of
respect for Owen's cooking, not as some marketing ploy. I'm willing to
wager that the place will be doing big business five years from now.

I live in the Back Bay and would never go to any Back Bay Restaurant
Group "food factory." (Sorry, I don't consider any of their places
restaurants.)

With one of these joints on every corner, those who enjoy creative,
well-prepared, seasonal food, have to leave our neighborhood to dine.

If a fine chef is a part of this, lets hope he moves on quickly to put
his skills to better use. He is harming his reputation by working with
this organization. And, lets hope that one day each of this company's
locations is taken over by real restaurants headed by folks who care
about food and hospitality.

I'll bet Kennedy was there because Charley Sarkis contributed to his
campaign. With his dog track at stake he's deep into political
contributions.

I consider myself a harsh food critic, but saying that none of the Back Bay
Group's establishments qualify as restaurants is just ridiculous. Also,
saying you have to leave the Back Bay to fine dine when Clio and L'Espalier
are there demonstrates a lack of culinary knowledge. The Back Bay Group is
a departure from Owen's usual insistence of having full control, but this
arrangement frees him from managerial oversight and allows him to focus on
just preparing and delivering great food. Owen's work as a personal chef to
the Kennedys predates his work with the Back Bay Group, so perhaps their
attending his restaurant's opening wasn't about dog racing.

I have to disagree.

The Papa Razzi at the Chestnut Hill Mall is a favorite of my
wife and mine for dinner and a movie. In fact, we ate at
the bar there last night, splitting a top loin steak with
sauteed fresh spinach, and crispy fried potatoes, all high quality
ingredients perfectly prepared. Kate, the bartender, is as
friendly as can be. The San Giovese that she recommended went
perfectly with the steak. I had the best four-cheese macaroni I ever
tasted at the Papa Razzi on Rte 53 in Hanover. The daily risotto
specials are often unusual and always delicious. If you want
flavorful Italian food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant ambiance,
you can't go wrong at Papa Razzi, at least not at any of the
locations we've tried.

Must have been an open bar.
